Visit Venetian Tower (Vardiola)

The term “vardiola” likely originates from the Italian word “guardiola,” meaning guard or observatory. These watchtowers were constructed by the Venetians along the coasts of the Ionian Islands, including Zakynthos, Cephalonia, and Kythira, to monitor and protect against potential maritime threats. The Vardiolas of Zakynthos are characterized by their small dimensions, robust stone walls, and distinctive square pyramid-shaped roofs. Most of these structures on Zakynthos were built during the administration of Venetian Proveditore (Governor) Claudio Gherardini, who served from 1768 to 1770. The Vardiola in Tsilivi dates back to around 1770.
